Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Friday, February 3- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Plant season color
- Primula along with Primroses and Iceland Poppies are now available for planting. Your early season annuals will continue to bloom right through April when planted now.
Later in the Week
- Control the new crops of seasonal weeds by cultivating them or spraying them with RoundUp or similar product while they are still small. With the days getting warmer and longer, the plants can get quite large quickly.
Other Things To-do
- Blueberries are available now and make an excellent companion plant to Azaleas, Camellias, Hosta and others in shady areas. Blueberry plants should yield 3t o 6 quarts of berries per year.
- When recycling clay, and plastic containers, it's smart to sterilize them first so that they are clean of any overwintering diseases. You need to wash the containers in warm water and bleach, one part bleach to nine parts water. Also, you can use a moistened rag and wipe the container thoroughly with the solution, rinse well, and then let them air dry before replanting.
- And finally, Horseradish roots are available at your favorite garden center but avoid planting it into the open ground. It spreads rapidly and is not easily contained. Instead, plant it in a pot or container.
