Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: 4th of July, Tuesday,- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Libra - Plant seasonal color, prune and pinch for growth
- Red, white, and blue seasonal color are available at your favorite garden center for the 4th of July. I’d also include an American Flag to show our patriotic colors.
- You shouldn’t be afraid to thin out or prune the center of your tomato plants. This will allow for better air circulation. Also, check for eaten leaves which are a sign that the Tomato Hornworm is active.
Later in the Week
- Although, they have been quiet so far this year, don't let the Yellow Jackets ruin your picnics and BBQ's. Several hours before sitting down to a meal, set out the Yellow Jacket Traps. Remember that as summer turn's to fall, the Yellow Jackets population will be increasing so don't let your guard down.
- If you haven't done so, raise the mowing height on your lawn mower. During the summer months, the taller grass shades the ground. This conserves moisture and slows evaporation on the warmer days. The mowing height is lowered in November after daylight saving time has ended.
Other Things To-do
- And finally, it's time to take a moment looks around your property for any potential fire hazards and eliminate them.
