Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Wednesday, May 10- Saturday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Libra/Scorpio - Plant seasonal color, tomatoes, prune and pinch for growth
- Zinnias are an excellent choice for summer color where deer are a problem.
- It’s not too late to plant tomatoes. With the rainy season concluded, they could outperform those planted much earlier.
Later in the Week
- Cultivating and mulching have been the primary methods of controlling weeds and conserving moisture in vegetable gardens. Cultivate lightly under shallow rooted pepper, squash, and cucumber plants and insulate the ground with a two-inch layer of mulch for moisture conservation.
Other Things To-do
- You prevent ants from climbing into plants by applying a two-inch band of Pest Barrier/Tanglefoot to the trunk, two feet off the ground. If the ants return, they will be trapped in the sticky gum-like resin, preventing their forward movement.
- And finally, it’s a good time to refresh water gardens from the winter. Water plants like Water Lilies are divided in the spring. Also, with larger ponds, you should lower the water level but don't empty it and remove the solid waste built on the bottom.
