Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Tuesday, August 29- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio,Leo - Plant seasonal color, and prune
- Lily of the Nile, Agapanthus, do not shed their spent flowers. You’ll need to cut them off with a pair of shears or scissors when they fade.
- Tomatoes get very crowded in their cages by this time of the year. So, It is not a bad idea to thin some of the shoots to open things up and improve the air circulation
Later in the Week
- It's not a bad time to prune the dead wood out of citrus and shape the plant(s). It is normal for citrus to have dead wood in the center of the plant. Also, remove all the sucker growth from the below the bud line. This growth is very aggressive, will easily dominate the plant and will never produce fruit.
Other Things To-do
- Yellow Jackets are very active in the fall months and easily agitated, as it’s mating season. It is recommended that you empty the trap(s), rinse them out with soapy water and add new attractants.
- Do not pull or tear the peppers, when harvesting them from the plant. They are easily uprooted, because of their shallow roots. Immature peppers become sweeter and or hotter as they mature.
- You’ll need to use a wire brush to remove the white calcium deposits on clay pots. Once the loose particles are removed, wipe the pots down with Linseed Oil to return the pots finish to its original color.
