Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Saturday, October 21
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn[Aquarius - Plan Herbs weed and cultivate
    • Start on all those unwanted weeds next spring by spraying the ground with Impede in areas under irrigation. Impede is a pre-emergent herbicide that kills the weed's seeds before germinating. It Is safely sprayed over and around any rooted trees, shrubs, or ground covers without damage. I
      • t is also safe enough to use around bulbs. In non-irrigated areas, you wait for the start of the faint season.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday and Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Plant seasonal color  
  • Pansies, Violas, Cyclamen, Primroses, and other fall and winter color are available for planting.
    • Don't let your guard down regarding snails and slugs, so bait your new plantings. They can do as much damage in the fall as in the spring.
Other Things To-do
  • October is the last month to fertilize roses with Rose Food and Citrus with their regular fertilizer. Next month, you switch to the winter fertilizer 0 10-10. 
  • With the rainy season about to begin, you should set out Terro Ant Station to prevent the ants from entering your house.
  • Finally, with the leaves falling, it is time to clean your gutters of all the gathered debris. You might look to install gutter screens to keep them clean and clear all year.
