Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

• Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - Plant Beans
  • Bush and Pole Beans are available by seed or transplants. The seeds can be started in individual pots and then transplanted into the ground.  

Later in the Week

• Monday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Best all-purpose planting days
• Wednesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Harvest and cultivate
  •  Leaf Lettuce can be harvested several weeks after planting. The outer leaves are best harvested with a pair of scissors. Repeat this weekly until the plant(s) goes to seed or bolts.

Other Things To-do

• Cymbidium Orchids are heavy feeders so monthly applications are recommended through October. In November, you switch fertilizer to 0-10-10 or Bloom.
• Most hedges are showing a new flush of growth. Before the new growth matures, it's a good time to prune them. They should be trimmed three times a year to keep a hedge tight and compact.
