Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Transplant
- Bearded Iris clumps can be dug up and divided at this time of year. However, if we're having warm to hot temperatures, such as the 90s, I might wait for it to cool down.
Later in the Week
- Wednesday and Thursday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Fertilize and water
- Only fertilize when the temperatures are in the eighties and constantly water ahead of time and immediately afterward.
Other Things To-do
- Yellow Jackets are very active in the fall months and easily agitated, as it's mating season. You should empty the trap(s), rinse them with soapy water, and add new attractants.
- Do not pull or tear the peppers when harvesting them from the plant. They are easily uprooted because of their shallow roots.
- Immature peppers become sweeter and or hotter as they mature. By this time of year, tomatoes get very crowded in their cages. So, it is not a bad idea to thin some of the shoots to open things up and improve the air circulation.
