12th Weekend Of The Summer Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Saturday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Virgo/Libra - Plant seasonal color
    • Zinnias, Vinca Rosea, and Victorian Salvia are available now for planting. When planted now, these annuals will continue to bloom until early December or until the first very cold night.

Later in the Week

  • Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Best All-Purpose planting days
    • Summer-flowering perennials like Echinaceas and Rudbeckia add vibrant color. In the garden  They thrive in warm temperatures and, once established, require less water.
    • Bearded Iris clumps can be dug up and divided during this time of year. However, if we are experiencing warm to hot temperatures in the 90s, I might wait until it cools down.
Other Things To-do
  • It's not too late to prune the late-season flowering shrubs. Proper shaping will prevent them from becoming overgrown.
  • After harvesting the blackberries and raspberries, it's time to prune the old fruiting canes. These canes are cut back to the ground because they will never produce again. Next year's crop will come from the new shoots at the base of the plant. Then, select the strongest canes and tie them to a trellis. All other growth is removed.
