Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Best all-around planting days of the month.
- September is an excellent time to plant new perennials. Those started from seeds or transplants in the fall will bloom next spring. Those seedlings planted in the spring will take a full year to bloom
Later in the Week
- Tuesday and Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Saggitaurus - Plant garlic
- Seed Garlic is available at your favorite garden center. It’s preferred to plant over store garlic, as there is a guaranteed yield and the gloves are not sprayed to prevent sporting.
Other Things To-do
- When harvesting thyme, oregano, rosemary and others, take more than your need. Group them all together in a vase or pitcher so you can snip off what is needed for cooking or garnishing and in between enjoy the fragrance.
- Don't forget to bait for snails and slugs as they are just as much a problem in the fall as they are in the spring. With all new plantings, be generous with your snail bait.
