1st Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: New Moon, Saturday, March 17, Wednesday, March 20 Spring Equinox
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of  Aries-
    • Liquidambars are leafing out and it will not be too long before the flower clusters emerge. These clusters produce the spiny seed pods that are such a mess. Once the blossom opened and the female part of the flower is exposed, spray the tree with Florel Fruit Eliminator. Florel aborts the blossom so none of the seed pods will form.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday/Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Taurus:  Plant seasonal color, cool season vegetables
    • Lettuce, Collard, Spinach, and Swiss Chard transplants are available at your favorite garden center for planting. Also available are Cabbage, Cauliflower and the rest of the cool season vegetables.
Other Things To-do
  • It's recommended to pick up all the spent blossoms on the ground under Camellia plants. Good sanitation practices are one of the few things we can do to prevent Camellia Petal Blight. Camellia Petal Blight causes the center of the flower to rot and there are no chemical controls available.
  • And finally, I'd remove all of the yellow or brown leaves on Primroses, Pansies, Violas, etc.. Once the plants have been groomed, its time to fertilize with Osmocote. The attention you give these plants now will extend the spring blooming season.
