1st Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: St Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17: New Moon on Wednesday, March 18: Friday, March 19, Spring Equinox
  • Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of  Aquarius -Harvest and cultivate
    • It’s a great weekend to prepare the soil for this year's vegetable garden. It's recommended to add soil amendments, compost, or other organic matter. Be generous with your amendments, as healthy soil leads to a more productive garden.

Later in the Week

  • Thursday-Wednesday; Moon in the sign of Pisces - Fertilize and waterApply an organic Fruit and Shade Tree fertilizer to promote new growth in Crape Myrtle and other trees. Crape Myrtles only bloom on the current year's growth; encouraging this new growth is essential. Also, remove any old, spent seed capsules still attached to the tree.
Other Things To-do
  • And finally, when planting seeds in the ground, I like to line the furrows with toilet paper (TP). Since most seeds are small and dark-colored, they’re easier to see against a white background.
  • Now is the time to prune early-flowering trees such as flowering and evergreen Pears, Flowering Plums, Flowering Magnolias, and Japanese Quince.
  • I'd remove all yellow or brown leaves from Primroses, Pansies, Violas, and similar plants. After grooming the plants, it's time to fertilize with Osmocote. The care you give these plants now will help extend their blooming season.
