1st Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Waning Half begins on Saturday, January 10
    • Saturday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio- Prune fruit trees
    • Fruit trees won't bear fruit if fruiting spurs are removed, so before pruning any fruit tree, identify the fruiting spurs. For Cherries, Apricots, Plums, and Prunes, look for the spurs in clusters on second-year and older wood. On peaches and nectarines, the spurs are only on second-year wood. With Apples and Pears, the short, stubby spurs are found on second-year and older wood. Unlike other fruit trees, these spurs remain productive for many years.

Later in the Week

  • Monday -Tuesday; Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Weed and cultivate
    •  It's not too early to start removing unwanted vegetation caused by the rains. As long as we have two to three hours of dry weather, products like Roundup, weed killer, or similar can be applied effectively; however, it will take several weeks before the growth turns yellow and dies.  Reminder about Round Up, it will kill any green plant material it is sprayed on.  Spray carefully around desired vegative plants.
