Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Sunday, March 29
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Plant flowering vines
- Carolina Jasmine makes a fast-growing, evergreen vine with vivid yellow flowers. It grows best in full sun or partial shade.
Later in the Week
- Monday-Wednesday; Moon in the sign of Libra/Scorpio - Plant for root growth pinch for new growth, and transplant perennials.
- Mexican primrose, foxglove, daylilies, and many other perennials are transplanted during the early spring. You can also divide these plants, but the division probably will not bloom until next spring.
- Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Plant Potatoes, harvest, and prune.
- Flower Pear and Plums have finished flowering for the year. So, now the time to prune. I'd remove the excess growth in the center of the trees and reduce the length of the outer branches to shape the canopy.
Other Things To-do
- While the temperatures are still cool, it's an excellent time to transplant container plants. Roses, Citrus, Japanese Maples, and plants growing in the same container for the last thirty-six months or longer should be replanted; otherwise, they become root-bound. You can move them to a larger container or keep them in the same pot by root pruning. I'd slide the plant out of the container, and with a pruning saw, slice two to three inches off the sides and four to six inches off the bottom of the root ball. The last step is to add fresh soil to the container and replant.
