2nd Weekend Of The Fall Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Waxing Half begins on Friday, September 18
  • Saturday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of  Libra/Scorpio- Plant seasonal color
    • Mums are the perfect word to describe the vibrant colors of fall. From gold and rust to bronze, yellow, pink, and white, there’s a stunning palette to enjoy. You can find all these beautiful Mums at your favorite garden center.
    • September is an ideal time to plant new perennials. Perennials started from seed or transplants will bloom next spring. On the other hand, seedlings planted in the spring will take a full year to bloom.

Later in the Week

  • Now’s the time to remove all the spent Agapanthus or Lily of the Nile blossoms. Cut off the stalks at the ground. Also, remove all the old blossoms from your perennials that have finished blooming.
  • When harvesting Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary, and other herbs, take more than you need. Instead of using them all at once, group them together in a vase or pitcher. This way, you can easily snip off what you need for cooking or garnishing, and you can also enjoy the herbs’ pleasant fragrance in between.
Other Things To-do
  • This month presents the final opportunity to pinch the new growth on Poinsettia plants. Pinching the growth encourages lateral growth, resulting in a compact plant. Next month, we’ll initiate the short-day treatment to stimulate blooming for the upcoming holidays.
  •  Now is an ideal time to start composting garden and kitchen waste. Garden trimmings decompose faster than larger pieces, so always cut or chop twigs and branches as small as possible.
