2nd Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Wednesday, March 25, Waxing Half begins
  •  Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Plant seasonal color and leafy vegetables
    • Easter is two weeks away, so refresh color bowls and containers with Petunias, Impatiens, Marigolds, Lobelias, along with Pansies and Violas.

Later in the Week

  • Now that the danger of frost has passed, it's okay to prune Citrus, Bougainvilleas, Hibiscus, and any other plants damaged by the winter cold
  • March is the month to start feeding acid-loving plants such as Azaleas, Rhododendrons, and Camellias with Azalea, Rhododendron, and Camellia Food. They should be fed monthly through October.
Other Things To-do
  • Now is the ideal time to prune Pyracantha for the fall berry harvest. When pruned before the new growth starts, the berries will grow on the main parts of the plant instead of on the long, arching, and sometimes leggy branches.
  •  In addition to controlling messy and unwanted fruits such as Flowering Plums, Crabapples, and Olives, Florel Fruit Eliminator also controls Mistletoe. Mistletoe is a parasite that can harm or kill trees if left unchecked. Florel works by detaching the plant from its roots and needs reapplication every two to three years.
