3rd Weekend Of The Fall Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Wednesday, September 23: Autumn Equinox is Wednesday, September 23
    • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio- Plant seasonal color
      • Sweet Peas planted now will bloom for the holidays. Sweet Peas have a hard seed coat, so be sure to soak them overnight in water before planting.

Later in the Week

  • Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn -Prune and fertilize
    • It is commonly not considered a fall activity, but pruning deciduous fruit trees is now being recommended. Peach, Plums, Apricots, Cherries, Nectarines can be pruned in the fall.
Other Things To-do
  • When planting trees, avoid planting on a fence line. With half the tree on your side and the other half on a neighbor's, you can avoid neighbor disputes in future years. For fall color, consider planting Raywood Ash, Liquidambar, or Red Maples.
  • And finally, we still have a few more warm days ahead of us so keep container plants watered daily when the temperatures are over 90 degrees.
