Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Saturday, September 26
- Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest and weed
- Pumpkins are ready for harvest when their foliage turns yellow, or when the pumpkins have turned orange and have a hard rind, a deep color, and a dried stem. At this point, stop watering them and let the plants die. Halloween is still weeks away, so you can leave the pumpkins in the patch or move them to a shady location until you’re ready to carve them.
Later in the Week
- Monday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Plant and transplant for root growth
- It’s fine to plant Daffodils and Narcissus now, but I recommend waiting until the end of October, when the weather has cooled, to plant the other spring-flowering bulbs.
Other Things To-do
- For old-school gardeners, this month is the last chance to feed Azaleas, Camellias, and Rhododendrons with the Azalea, Camellia, and Rhododendron Fertilizer. During winter, feed shade plants with the winter fertilizer, which has a ratio of 0-10-10
- Finally, when planting fall bulbs, always plant them in groups or clusters instead of in a straight line. A straight line of flowers doesn’t create much visual impact when they bloom. Also, don’t forget to add Bulb Food under each bulb.
