4th Weekend Of The Holiday Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: New Moon, Monday, December 14
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Prune, water, compost, and fertilizer
    • Container plants can and do go dry during the winter months. This usually occurs to those under the eves or patio covering, so give them a drink every three weeks.

Later in the Week

  • Wednesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Prune and fertilize
    •  O-10-10 is the winter fertilizer that’s applied to all shade-loving plants. I’d also apply it to Bearded Iris to increase the blooms next year.
Other Things To-do
  • Remove all the falling leaves that have and are accumulating in the landscape.  If left long term, the winter rains will compact the debris, especially in ground covers and turf, damaging the them. Also, they’ll adhere to bare ground making them difficult to remove.
