4th Wekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Sunday, April 5, Easter: Half Waxing begins Thursday, April 9
    • Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Plant and transplant for root growth
      • March was an exceptional month for planting just about everything, and April will be another great month to plant, even with a little rain.

Later in the Week

  • Monday-Tuesday; Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Prune, transplant, and plant trees and tubers
    •  Dahlia tubers are still available at your favorite garden center. Dahlias offer a wide variety of types that provide vibrant color all summer long. There are many options to choose from in different shapes, sizes, and colors. A perfect choice for summer color
  •  Thursday-Friday; Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Plant Beets, fertilize and prune
    • Lemons, Oranges, Limes, and other citrus are now fed monthly with Citrus Food through October. To prevent fertilizer burn, water the plants the day before or at least 4 hours prior to fertilizing, and water them immediately afterward.
Other Things To-do
  • Alyssum and Marigolds provide plenty of summer color both in containers and in the ground. They can also be planted to prevent Whiteflies in vegetable gardens.  It is okay to cut the foliage of ferns damaged by the winter cold to the ground.  The new growth will develop from the base of the clumps, and you can encourage growth with an all-purpose fertilizer.
