Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter Begins On Friday, October 6
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Plant for root growth
- Onion sets, along with Garlic and Shallots, are available for planting. You should find red, yellow and brown sets. Onion sets mature faster than those planted by seed.
Later in the Week
- Thursday: Moon in the sign of Cancer- Start a compost pile
- When composting, shredded leaves will compost much faster than those left whole. You can rent a shredder, but a lawn mower with a bag works just as well. The leaves are stored in large plastic bags for use next year.
Other Things To-do
- When planting tulips, daffodils, and other fall bulbs, don't forget to add Bulb Food. Bulb Food is a specially formulated fertilizer for spring and fall flowering bulbs.
- Depending on the size, apply one teaspoon or tablespoon per bulb at the bottom of the hole, then cover the fertilizer with soil. After flowering next spring, apply a second application of Bulb Food.
- It's not too late to repair the large, bare lawn spots from the summer heat. Scott's EZ Seed simplifies the job with mulch seed and fertilizer all in one product.
