5th Weekend Of The Summer Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Full Moon Thursday, July 10: 4th July Weekend
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Best all-purpose weekend for planting
    •  Pinching back leggy annuals, such as petunias and impatiens, is recommended. I  remove 50% of the new growth. This will encourage the side shoots to develop, making the plants more compact.
    • It's not too late to start string beans from seed. Late-planted beans are less susceptible to weather fluctuations than early-season plantings. Once the seedlings emerge, be sure to bait for snails, slugs, and earwigs with Sluggo

Later in the Week

  • Herbs planted in containers offer a variety of colorful options. Upright Rosemary or Sage planted with Vinca Minor, Million Bells (Calibrachoa), or Trailing Lobelia are some options. Parsley intermixed with white, pink, or purple Alyssum is eye-catching.
Other Things To-do
  • Although Yellow Jackets have been quiet so far this year, they tend to become pesky starting with the 4th of July holiday. So, several hours before enjoying an outdoor BBQ, set out the Yellow Jacket traps.
  •  When cultivating a vegetable garden, be careful not to disturb the roots around pepper plants. Peppers are shallow-rooted and do not like their roots disturbed.
  •  Finally, take a moment to look around your property for any potential fire hazards and eliminate them.
