Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon, Saturday, October 10
- Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Best planting days
- You may still plant cool-season vegetables such as Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Peas, Spinach, and Swiss chard. Your favorite garden center has transplants, because starting these crops from seed is no longer practical. If space is limited, consider containers for your fall crops.
- Dividing Bearded Irises now ensures blooms next year. If you wait until spring, flowering will be delayed until the following year.
Later in the Week
- Wednesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Plant onions
- Red, White, Brown, and Red Onion Sets are now available at your most garden center.
Other Things To-do
- Aphids target new growth on Camellias during the fall. Insecticidal Soap is a safe, effective solution. One or two applications should address the problem.
- When storing seeds for the next season, select glass jars or zip-lock plastic bags. Also add Silica Gel to absorb moisture inside the container during storage. This will improve seed viability and germination
