Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter begins on Saturday, April 23
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Weed harvest, control pests
- As long as the temperatures are under 75 degrees, you can spray to control Mistletoe in large deciduous trees. Florel Fruit Eliminator chemical prunes the undesirable Mistletoe it’s reapplied as necessary. FYI, Mistletoe is a parasite plant.
- When harvesting Chives, be sure to cut the stems off at the base of the plants. This encourages the new shoots. Shearing the plant will weaken it.
Later in the Week
- Monday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant potatoes, fruit trees, and harvest
- Oranges are flowering and setting fruit for the next crop. So, it's not necessary to remove last year's oranges; instead, leave them on the tree until they sweeten up.
Other Things To-do
- Easter Lily plants are moved outside when the flowers begin to fade. You continue to water and feed them until the foliage starts to yellow. You store the pots in a cool, dry area when the foliage turns brown. Next February, the bulbs can be removed from the pot and planted in a shady location.
- When planting corn, it's better to plant in many short rows than in several long rows. With long rows, you get poor pollination and incomplete ears of corn. The wind is corn's chief pollinator, so every ear has a complete set of kernels; every silk has to be pollinated. .
