Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon Saturday, February 19: President's Day Weekend,
- Saturday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius/Pisces - Harvest, weed, and plant seasonal color
- Now is the time to replant color bowls with Cineraria's, Iceland Poppies, Primulas, and Primroses for unique color combinations.
- With no rain in the forecast, it's an excellent time to cultivate the unwanted vegetation around trees and shrubs.
- Saturday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius/Pisces - Harvest, weed, and plant seasonal color
Later in the Week
- Monday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Pisces/Aries - Weed, prune, control pests
- You can expect this will be a big year for snails. So, you must often apply Snail Bait with all new planting of pansies, violas, cool-season vegetables, and rebait. Sluggo and Sluggo Plus are organic baits that are safe to use around edibles.
Other Things To-do
- Although many do not think so, this is an excellent time to prune conifers, especially Monterey Pines. The pruning wounds will callus over before the insects that carry the Pitch Canker Disease are active. Conifers include junipers, cedars, pines, and cypress. Also, it is unnecessary to seal these wounds as natural plant resins will do it for you.
