Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: Saturday, April 22, Earth Day: Wednesday, April 26, New Moon- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Prune, water, compost and fertilize
- Camellias, Azaleas, and Rhododendrons are fed monthly with Azalea, Camellia, and Rhododendron Food through October. Osmocote is an alternative with an application now and a follow-up application in August. Also, clean up all the spent flowers that gather at the base of the plants.
Later in the Week
- Monday/Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest, cultivate, weed, control pests
- Control Aphids on roses with Insecticidal Soap, and repeat as necessary
Other Things To-do
- When mowing turf, alternate your mowing pattern. This prevents the grass from growing in one direction.
- Coffee grounds along with the filter can be added to a composter or pile. Coffee is a natural acidifier.
- And finally, it’s not too late to prune spring flowering shrubs that have finished blooming.
