Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, October 20
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant seasonal color
- Now is the time to plant Pansies, Violas, Iceland Poppies, and English Primroses. Planted now, they'll continue blooming right on through the spring.
Later in the Week
- Monday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest, cultivate, weed, and control pests
- Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Plant for root growth
- Crocus, Freesias, and the other spring-flowering bulbs can be planted in containers for color next spring.
Other Things To-do
- Arriving at your favorite garden center is the new selection of the fall and winter-blooming Sasanqua Camellias. Besides blooming early, they have another desirable characteristic: they will tolerate the afternoon sun when the roots are mulched.
- It's a good time to repair turf damaged from the summer heat. First, I'd reseed the entire area to thicken thinning grass. Then, for bare spots, use E-Z Seed or a similar product. It combines grass seed, fertilizer, and a seed cover. It works very well in small areas.
- Finally, Peach, Plum, Apricot, Cherry, Nectarine and Plum trees are going dormant, so stop watering them.
