Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon. Tuesday, October 21
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Virgo
- There's still time to plant cool-season vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, garden peas, spinach, and Swiss chard. Your favorite garden center has transplants available, as it's too late to start these plants from seed.
Later in the Week
- Wednesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Plant seasonal color
- Now is an excellent time to plant fall and winter-blooming Sasanqua Camellias. Sasanqua Camellias flourish in full sun with plenty of water and are available at your local garden center.
- Ranunculus, Freesias, and Anemone bulbs can now be planted either in the ground or in containers. They are a perfect addition to any garden for early spring color.
Other Things To-do
- You should continue fertilizing roses and citrus during the fall months.
- Primrose clumps from previous years can be divided and replanted. Enhance the planting area with organic matter. Space the plants six to eight inches apart, and fertilize with a starter fertilizer. You can find additional plants at your favorite garden center.
