Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Friday, May 1
- Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Plant flowering vines, cultivate, weed, and control pests
- Climbing roses are in full bloom right now, so it is an ideal time to select and plant them on an arbor or a picket fence.
- Insecticidal Soap is an excellent organic control for Aphids on edible and non-edible plants.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday-Wednesday; Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant seasonal color
- Fibrous Begonias are often considered shade lovers; however, they are sun lovers. With adequate water, they thrive in afternoon sun all season long. Fibrous Begonias come in a variety of leaf colors and with pink, white, or red flowers.
- You can mix seasonal colors and herbs in the same container in any combination.
Other Things To-do
- To prevent ants from climbing up and down your trees and shrubs, apply Pest Barrier or Tanglefoot to the trunk. A two-inch band around the trunk will prevent the ants from reaching the canopy.
- Apples, Pears, and Asian Pears are fruit trees to plant where they’ll receive regular summer water. They are ideal for planting under and surrounding their canopy or in turf.
