Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - harvest weed, cultivate and control pests
- Roses have many surface roots. So I wouldn’t be overly concerned when exposing some when cultivating. They’ll be covered later when you mulch. Once the rainy season concludes
Later in the Week
- Monday-Tuesday - Moon in the sign of Cancer - Plant spring color
- Besides the typical annuals, sow California Poppy seeds into existing containers. The feathery foliage and bright orange flowers have a dramatic effect.
- For a splash of summer color plant Tiger, Asiatic, and Hybrid Lilies. They grow four to five feet tall and like the morning sun. Lilies are equally as spectacular on decks and patio in containers.
- Wednesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Cultivate Weed, and prune
- Roses still can be pruned even with the new growth emerging. The only damage from pruning late is that you’ll delay the first set of blooms
Other Things To-do
- When fertilizing fruit and shade trees, use one-half pound of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter measured two feet off the ground. The fertilizer is spread under the drip line of trees and not piled at the trunk. I prefer using 16-16-16 a multi-purpose fertilizer.
- And finally, don't over-water new seedlings otherwise they will die from Damping Off disease. Let the soil surface dry out a bit between watering.
