Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Halloween Thursday, October 31: New Moon, Friday, November 1
- Saturday- Sunday Moon in the sign of Leo/Virgo - Harvest, cultivate
- Prepare annual beds for spring by applying organic matter such as manure or a thick leaf mulch to break down over winter.
Later in the Week
- Orange, purple and black Violas are available for Halloween. They can be planted inside a pumpkin and in any other container.
- After carving a pumpkin, coat the inside of the cavity with Vaseline to prevent it from collapsing early.
Other Things To-do
- Leaves are falling; so it is time to clean your gutters of all the gathered debris. Consider installing gutter screens, which will keep them clean and clear all year.
- And finally, there is still time to plant bulbs. It is one of the better times of the year to do so, as the ground is still warm from the summer heat.
