8th Weekend Of The Fall Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Sunday, October 25
  • Saturday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest root crops
    • Although Carrots can be harvested at any time, the best results come from picking them early in the morning. The day before harvesting, water the plants thoroughly so the soil softens, and the long taproots emerge more easily.

Later in the Week

  • Monday-Friday:  Moon in the sign of  Taurus/Cancer - Plant for root and transplant for root growth
    • The fall planting season is nearing its end. Although you should not expect much top growth, planting now will establish roots for next year. Once the rainy season begins and the ground is wet, the planting season will conclude.
Other Things To-do
  • Get a head start on those unwanted weeds next spring by spraying Weed Impede on the ground. Weed Impede is a pre-emergent herbicide that kills the weed seeds before they germinate. You can safely spray it over and around rooted trees, shrubs, and ground covers without harming them. It is also safe enough to use around bulbs.
  • And finally, as leaves fall, it is time to clear your gutters of accumulated debris. Consider installing gutter screens to keep them clean and clear year-round.
