Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Tuesday, March 7, along with being California Arbor Day
- Saturday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Cultivate and weed
- The unwanted grasses and weeds are growing rapidly, so don't procrastinate in controlling them. When small, they are easy to cultivate or pull by hand.
Later in the Week
- Monday and Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Plant flowering vines
- The early spring flowering vines are now available at your favorite garden center.
- Wednesday and Thursday: Moon in the sign of Libra - Plant for root growth
- Carrots, Radishes, Turnips, and Beets can all be sown into the open ground in containers. A long rectangular box is the best.
Other Things To-do
- .Be sure to keep the area under Camellia plants clean from all the spent flowers. Good sanitation practices are the only method to prevent Camellia Petal Blight. Camellia Petal Blight causes the flowers to rot in the center.
- When planting leaf lettuce, there is no need to wait until the head matures before harvesting. After three weeks, you can continuously remove the outer one to two rows of leaves until the plants go to seed.
- And finally, Tuesday, 3/7 is Arbor Day (California), so feed fruit, shade, and ornamental trees with an all-purpose organic fertilizer.
