Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter begins Friday, March 10
- Saturday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Libra/Scorpio - Plant for root growth and seasonal color
- You rejuvenate the existing soil in color bowls by adding all-purpose organic fertilizer before replanting. Now is the time to plant Cinerarias, Iceland Poppies, Pansies Primulas and Primroses. Easter is April 1.
Later in the Week
- Wednesday/Friday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Plant potatoes and fruit trees
- You can grow potatoes on a deck or patio with a Gardman Potato bag. It’s a great kid or grandkid activity. You’ll have homemade French Fries for the 4th of July holiday.
Other Things To-do
- The new foliage is emerging on rose bushes, so it will not be long before the Aphids show up. Rose Systemic applied now will control the Aphids before they do any damage to the soft, young, new growth.
- And finally, here is an easy way to check if seed left from previous years is still viable. You pour the seed into a glass, jar filled with water. The seed that floats is discarded. sinks to the bottom should be saved and planted. You dry the seed out by spreading it over a paper towel and covering it with a second sheet then plant soon.
