Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon on Tuesday, May 15
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest, cultivate, weed and control pests
- Plants absorb water quickly when the soil has been cultivated to remove weeds. A watering basin is suggested to prevent the water from rolling away. Cultivating can also controls the unwanted vegetation under the canopy of plants
Later in the Week
- Wednesday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - Plant vines and melons
- May is the perfect month to plant melons. Transplants for Watermelon, Honey Dew, Cantaloupes, Muskmelons as well as pumpkins are all available now. When planting, give melons plenty of room to spread out and water at the base of the plants.
Other Things To-do
- When replanting color bowls and other containers, it's not necessary to sterilize the pots. Container plants typically die from normal causes like neglect and water stress, not diseases. Also, it's not necessary to use fresh soil instead recycle and rejuvenate the old soil.
- And finally, Beneficial Nematodes are applied now to the soil around tomatoes to control the emerging adults of the overwatering Hornworms.
