Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon on Saturday. November 14
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Prune, water, compost, and fertilize
- If you need or want to, roses can be transplanted to any other location. I’d prune them aggressively first to make the move easier. When placing container plants under the eves or patio cover for cold weather protection, be sure to give them a good soaking first.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn; Prune, water, and fertilize
- It is recommended to prune Apricots in the fall to avoid the air-bone disease that enters the pruning wounds during the winter. Once the rainy season begins, you would wait to prune when there is ten days window of dry weather.
Other Things To-do
- Now is the time to winterize cold-sensitive plants like Bougainvilleas, Citrus, Hibiscus and others by spraying them with Bonide Wilt Stop. Bonide Wilt Stop puts a protective barrier between the foliage and the cold.
- GreenAll PH Adjustor, Soil Sulfur, or similar product is now applied to shady areas to makes the soil more acid by lowering the soil pH. It is evenly spread and mixed into the ground. The winter rain does the rest.
- And finally, replace any broken splash blocks or those that have disappeared and clean out your rain gutters before the rainy season begins in earnest.
