Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 1: Full Moon, Wednesday, November 5
- Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Pisces/Aries -
- There is still time to plant Crocus, Botanical Tulips, Grape Hyacinths, and other spring-flowering bulbs because of the short days and cool temperatures.
- November is the ideal time to plant California natives such as Buckwheats, Ceanothus, Toyons, and native bunch grasses.
Later in the Week
- Snails and slugs are still active, so apply your bait with any new plantings.
- Agapanthus, Yarrow, and Bearded Iris can be divided now.
Other Things To-do
- It's a great time to visit your favorite garden center to see the fall colors on display in the trees. Liquidambars, Raywood Ash, Pistache, Maples, and Pin Oaks are putting on a beautiful show. Although you can plant later, now is the perfect time to start mentally noting your preferences and dislikes.
- Now is the perfect time to plant wildflower seeds. You can find California Poppy or a mix of various wildflowers at your favorite garden center. Scratch the soil with a rake to loosen the top 1/2 inch, broadcast the seed, and then scratch it in. Water the seed afterward, let Mother Nature handle the rest.
