Last Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Tuesday. May 29
  •   Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Plant Seasonal color, pinch to control growth,  and plant tomatoes
    •     With warm days, It is time to replace the Pansies, Cyclamen, Violas, Ice Poppy and others.  Petunias, Zinnias, Saliva, and Vinca, are summer annuals that tolerate the heat.  Also, do not be afraid to pinch them back after each flush of flowers to keep the compact.

Later in the Week

  • Thursday/Friday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn: Plant and transplant for root growth
    •   Before transplanting trees and shrubs, water them while they’re still in their original containers. Water while the holes are being dug or the day before. This prevents water stress cause when water doesn’t penetrate the root ball and instead rolls around it.
Other Things To-do
  • It's time to reconstruct the water basins around trees and shrubs. A traditional watering basin should extend from the trunk of the plant to just beyond the drip line. On a slope, be sure that the basin is higher on the downward side to catch and hold the water.
  •   Prune flowering vines after they have finished blooming. To prevent them from taking over an area, prune them back aggressively.
