Last Weekend Of The Summer Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: New Moon, Saturday, August 27
    • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Plant flowering vines,
      • Bougainvilleas are in full bloom right now. They provide lots of color throughout the fall months. But they need to be protected from frost this winter.

Later in the Week

  • A good selection of summer flowering annuals is still available at your favorite garden center. When planted now, these annuals continue to bloom until early December or the first freezing night.
Other Things To-do
  • Do not pull or tear peppers from the plant when harvesting peppers. They have a shallow root system and can be easily uprooted. In addition, peppers are harvested when they are immature, becoming sweeter and/or hotter as they mature.
  •  You'll need to use a wire bush to remove the white calcium deposits on clay pots. Once the loose particles are removed, wipe the pots down with Linseed Oil to return the pot's finish to its original color.
  • Finally, to prevent fertilizer burn during the summer months, all plants, including turf, should be watered the day before
