Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Sunday, March 8, Daylight Saving Time Begins (Spring Forward): Wednesday, March 11, the Waning Half begins
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Prune fruit trees, 
    •  It’s not too late to prune roses and fruit trees, and don’t worry if new growth is starting to appear or they are blooming.  

Later in the Week

  • Monday -Tuesday; Moon in the sign of  Sagittarius - Plant tubers, trees, and prune
    • Seed potatoes are available at most garden centers. One pound of seed potatoes yields five pounds of potatoes. Supermarket potatoes are not recommended because the yields are unpredictable; they have been treated to prevent spouting.
Other Things To-do
  • If your lawn hasn't been fertilized in the last six weeks, it's time to start. For Bluegrass and Rye, delaying too long can lead to lawn rust. Depending on the fertilizer, your lawn should be fed every six weeks from January through June, with one additional application between Labor Day and Thanksgiving.  Fescue is fed once in the spring and fall
  •  Fruit and shade trees are fed with Fruit and Shade Tree Fertilizer to promote a new flush of growth. A half-pound of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter, measured two feet above the ground, is the recommended amount
