6th Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Full Moon. Tuesday, April; 23
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Plant vines and seasonal color
    • Vincas, Zinnias, Salvias, and Marigolds are your best bet for hot, dry locations. A one-inch layer of mulch is recommended to insulate the roots from the heat and conserve moisture.

Later in the Week

  • Wednesday and Thursday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Plant tomatoes, prune, and fertilize
    • Tomatoes are best planted deep, up to the second set of leaves. You only want the top two sets of leaves showing above the ground. So, your best plants to buy are tall and leggy.
    • It's still okay to prune spring flowering shrubs that have finished blooming.
Other Things To-do
  • Control Aphids on roses with Insecticidal Soap and repeat as necessary.
  •  Coffee grounds, along with the filter, can be added to a composter or pile. Coffee is a natural acidifier.
  •  When the flowers begin to fade, Easter Lily plants are moved outside. You continue to water and feed them until the foliage starts to yellow. When the foliage turns brown; you store the pots in a cool, dry area. The bulbs can be removed from the pot and planted in a shady location next February.
