8th Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

Limited gardening this weekend because of the wet conditions. ....
  • Lunar Phase: Thursday, March 7, California Arbor Day
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius: Plant tubers
    • Summer flowering perennial bulbs such as Dahlias can be planted now.  Also available are Cannas, Gladiolus, and Lilies. They bloom into the fall and thrive in containers and in the ground.

Later in the Week

  • Monday and Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Fertilize and prune
    • Fruit and shade trees are fed an organic all-purpose or tree fertilizer with the flush of new growth. The recommended rate is a half-pound of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter measured two feet off the ground.
    • The unwanted grasses and weeds are increasing, so don't procrastinate in controlling them.
  •  Wednesday and Thursday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Plant Onion sets, harvest and cultivate
    • Red, brown, and yellow onion sets, shallots, and garlic are now available for planning.
Other Things To-do
  • Rejuvenate the soil in color bowls by adding all-purpose organic fertilizer before replanting. Now is the time to plant Cineraria, Iceland Poppies, Pansies Primulas, and Primroses.
  • Finally, here is an easy way to check if the seed left from previous years is still viable. You pour the seed into a glass, jar, or water. The sinks to the it should be saved and planted, while the others are discarded.
