6th Weekend of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: President's Day Weekend
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - Harvest
    • Tangerines and Mandarin Oranges are best harvested by cutting the fruit off with a piece of the stem attached. It's recommended that you use a pair of scissors or hand shears. Before harvesting, you should taste test several for sweetness. If they are sour, hold off picking any for a month.

Later in the Week

  • Wednesday and Thursday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Weed, control pests
    • Weather permitting, cultivate the unwanted vegetation. They are easily hoed down.
Other Things To-do
  • With a permanent marker, mark frequently used tools with measurements like inches and feet on the handle. This will help you space plants or rows uniformly by having the measurement within easy reach.
  • With landscape trees, shrubs, and ground covers, you encourage the flush of new growth by fertilizing with an organic all-purpose fertilizer. You can spread the fertilizer by hand or with a hand-held spreader. Be sure the pellets are evenly distributed around and under the drip line of each plant. Unlike other times of the year, it is unnecessary to water the fertilizer as Mother Nature will do it for you.
