Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Tuesday, November 25, Average first day frost in zone 9: Thursday, November 27, Thanksgiving
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn:
- Flowering cabbage and kale are now available for planting. Besides their color, they’re edible and make an excellent garnish or a colorful addition to salads. The first leaves to pick are the ones at the bottom of the plant.
Later in the Week
- With the start of the rainy season, we should remove any watering basins around trees and shrubs. The water should drain away from the plant's crown as quickly as possible. And finally, with the days getting shorter, it’s time to lower the height on your lawnmower.
Other Things To-do
- Applying a Copper Fungicide Spray in fall is essential for controlling Peach Leaf Curl and 'Shot-Hole' Fungus on plums, peaches, and nectarines. It is best applied when about fifty percent of the leaves have fallen or around Thanksgiving.
- GreenAll true Blue is used on blueberries and shade-loving plants to make the soil more acidic by lowering the soil pH. It is evenly spread and mixed into the soil. Additionally, it is applied to hydrangeas to turn them blue or to keep their blue color. Follow the instructions on the packaging for repeat applications.
- Finally, replace any broken splash blocks or those that have disappeared, and clean out your gutters before the rainy season begins in earnest.
