1st Weekend Of The Holiday Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Tuesday, Waxing Half begins on Tuesday,1: Veterans Day is Tuesday, November 11
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces/Cancer - Plant root crops, Plant and transplant for root growth.
    • Radishes, Beets, and Carrots are successfully grown in containers on a deck, patio, or balcony. Any type or shape will do as long as it has drainage holes in the bottom.

Later in the Week

  • Wednesday-Friday; Moon in the sign of Virgo - Harvest and cultivate
    • Green tomatoes can be ripened off the vine in a homemade ripening chamber. All you need is any size cardboard or plastic box with a lid. The tomatoes are placed on a pad of newspapers so they don't touch, covered with another layer of newspaper. The lid is placed on the box and stored in a cool location. You then check the box every five to seven days and remove those tomatoes that have turned red.
Other Things To-do
  • Now is the time to winterize cold-sensitive plants like Bougainvilleas, Citrus, Hibiscus, and others by spraying them with Bonide Wilt Stop. Bonide Wilt Stop puts a protective barrier between the foliage and the cold.
  • It is time to take down, clean, and store Yellow Jacket Traps for next year.  I’d empty the contents, throw away the cotton swab, rinse the trap out and let them air dry. Yellow Jacket hives are in decline. The workers and males are dying off naturally as the mating season has concluded, while the queen(s) are getting ready to abandon their nest and hibernate for the winter.
