Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter Begins on Sunday, May 22
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Harvest, cultivate, mulch, weed, and plant onions
- With water restrictions not that far off, It makes perfect sense to mulch your trees, shrubs, ground covers, and vegetables. A two-inch layer will insulate the ground, conserving moisture and retarding weeds.
- When harvesting strawberries, take a portion of the stem with each berry and store them dry and unwashed.
Later in the Week
- Monday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Prune, fertilize, water compost
- It's time to increase the frequency you water container plants. Three to four times per week and daily when the temperatures are 90 degrees or more.
- Osmocote is a time-release fertilizer for all color plants, whether in the ground or in containers. Nutrients are released over four months every time you water.
Other Things To-do
- And finally, remove the brown blooms off your Azalea plants. Azaleas are not self-shedding so the spent flowers will remain all summer long and look unattractive.
