Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon, Monday, May 30: Memorial Day Weekend
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Fertilize, and prune for shaping
- Most hedges are finished with their flush of new growth. So now, is a perfect time to shear them back to keep them compact and dense. This applies to both tall and low growing hedge
Later in the Week
- Wednesday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Plant seasonal color -
- Zinnia, Vinca, Portulaca, and Salvia are the primary summer annuals that love hot, dry conditions. Therefore, this is an excellent time to replace the spring color and be sure to mulch them.
Other Things To-do
- Leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, and chard are best harvested in the early morning while it's cool. It is also advisable that you use a pair of scissors instead of tearing them off.
- For grassy weeds in ivy, ornamental strawberry, hypericum, and other ground covers, including Bermuda Grass in Junipers, you should be using Grass-B-Gon. Grass-B-Gon is a selective herbicide that kills the grass but will not damage broadleaf ground covers.
- And finally, this is the weekend to plant melons. You'll find Watermelon, Cantaloupes, and Honeydew melons plants at your favorite garden center.
