1st Weekend Of The Summer Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Tuesday, June 7
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Harvest, cultivate, weed, and control pests
    • Cultivating the soil around summer vegetables with a hand cultivator prevents the soil from forming a crust layer. But be gentle around shallow-rooted veggies such as peppers, squash, and cucumbers.

Later in the Week

  • Monday-Tuesday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Virgo- plant flowering vines
    •  Honeysuckle is an evergreen vine with creamy tubular flowers. They like a sunny location and are a favorite of Hummingbirds.
  •  Wednesday - Friday: Moon in the sign of Libra -seasonal plant color
    •  Vinca Rosea is a favorite summer-flowering annual. It has lush green foliage that's cooling to look at even on the hottest day. It flowers all summer long and into the fall.
Other Things To-do
  • You help pollinate tomato plants by flicking each bloom during the warmest part of the day or by shaking the tomato cages. The pollen is naturally sticky. So it will not be shaken away.
  •  And finally, keep annuals like Petunias, Impatiens, Verbena, and others from getting leggy by pinching them back 30 -50% after each flush of flowers.
