Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon, Saturday, May 15
- Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Water, plant beans and melons
- May is a great time to start planting melons! You can find transplants for Watermelon, Honey Dew, Cantaloupes, Muskmelons, and Pumpkins now. When you plant them, make sure they have plenty of space to grow and water them at the base.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday - Wednesday; Moon in the sign of Cancer - Best planting days
- With the rainy season ending, it’s not too late to plant a vegetable garden. The warm days and nights are ideal for tomatoes, hot peppers, melons, and eggplant. Late-season gardens are often just as productive as earlier ones.
Other Things To-do
- Use Beneficial Nematodes in the soil around your tomato plants right now to help keep the Tomato Hornworm pupae in check. This is the stage right before the moth becomes an adult. Once the adult moth hatches, it lays eggs on the plants, which then turn into the big green worm with the horn-like tail.
- Keep snails from climbing into the canopy of citrus and other shrubs by attaching Copper Tape to the trunk about two feet off the ground. The Copper will not kill the snails, but it will halt their forward progress.
