Last Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Waxing Half begins on Saturday, May 23: Memorial Day weekend
  • Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Plant vines
    •  Trumpet Vines and Star Jasmine are bursting into bloom at your local garden center, along with climbing roses. These beautiful vines are perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any garden.

Later in the Week

  • Thursday-Friday; Moon in the sign of  Scorpio -  Plant corn
    • When planting corn, it is crucial to plant it in close proximity within rows or hills. Corn relies on wind for pollination, and insufficient wind can result in missing kernels on the cob.
  •  Tuesday-Wednesday - Moon in the sign of  Libra - Plant seasonal color
    • As the days grow warmer, it is an opportune time to plant Marigolds, Petunias, Salvia, and Vinca, which are summer annuals well-suited to withstand the heat. Additionally, it is advisable to prune Petunias back after each bloom to maintain their compact growth.
    • Ageratum, Lobelia, and Alyssum are a few of the spring and summer flowering annuals that can be planted with Parsley, Basil, Rosemary, and other herbs.
Other Things To-do
  • As the Mosquito season approaches, it is advisable to take measures to reduce Mosquito populations in ponds, fountains, and birdbaths. A recommended solution is to add a quarter of a Mosquito Dunk per five square feet of surface water. Mosquito Dunks are environmentally safe for humans, birds, and fish.
  •  It is time to reconstruct the water basins surrounding trees and shrubs. A conventional watering basin should extend from the plant’s trunk to just beyond its drip line. On slopes, ensure that the basin is elevated on the downslope to capture and retain water. During warm temperatures, it is crucial that the water penetrates the root ball and does not dissipate.
