Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Sunday, May 31 ( Blue Moon as its the second Full Moon of the month)
- Saturday-S8unday
- You can assist with pollinating tomato plants by gently flicking each bloom during the warmest part of the day or by shaking the tomato cages. The pollen is naturally sticky.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday - Wednesday Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Plant root crops
- Now is the time to sow another row of Beets, Radishes, and Turnips. A regular planting schedule gives you a steady supply of these veggies year-round.
- Thursday-Friday; Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Weed, cultivate, and harvest
- After removing weeds, it is advisable to apply a layer of mulch. A two- to three-inch layer is recommended to conserve moisture and effectively prevent weed regrowth.
Other Things To-do
- Your roses should now have completed their initial bloom cycle and require pruning. Select an outer bud and cut close to a leaf bud at a 30 to 45-degree angle. Leaving excess stem tissue will cause it to wither and turn black.
- Finally, French and English Lavender is pruned after the flowering period. The spent flowers are removed, leaving sufficient foliage to cover the plant’s exposed center.
